Introducing the SALT Program!

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." - Matthew 5:13

Scripture calls us the salt of the earth. That means, followers of Jesus have a unique role in the work that Christ is doing. We are the salt of the earth. Like salt, we preserve things that are good, making them last longer. Like salt, we purify things that have been contaminated. And like salt, we enhance flavor, adding taste and making things better.

The Square Inch Scholarship for Academics, Leadership and Transformation (SALT) Program is a yearlong Discipleship, Leadership Formation, and Community Engagement initiative that offers college students an opportunity to be mentored and invested in by local community leaders in the Greater Third Ward. Surrounded by a supportive network, these students will be shaped into wholehearted justice-driven leaders who take ownership of the social and spiritual renewal of the Greater Third Ward community.

Last month, Square Inch Houston received received a $3,500 Innovation Grant by participation in Foundations of Christian Leadership through Leadership Education at Duke Divinity.

Leadership Education aims to create lasting change in U.S. congregations by supporting Christian leaders and the institutions they serve. They design educational services, develop intellectual resources, and facilitate networks of institutions that cultivate a coherent vision of Christian institutional leadership and form Christian leaders.

Leadership Education is a non-degree-granting initiative of Duke Divinity School funded by Lilly Endowment Inc. and based in Durham, N.C.

We have started receiving applications for the SALT Program from students at Texas Southern University. We are exited for the applicants we have so far, and will stop receiving applications on May 30. After that, we'll interview our applicants and make final selections mid-summer, with orientation beginning in August.

In the coming months, we will be reaching out to other partner organizations, churches and individuals. Your continued support for our initiative gives us hope for the opportunities that will take shape as Square Inch Houston continues to grow into its mission: "Mobilizing wholehearted, justice driven leaders for the social and spiritual renewal of communities."

Thank you all for your partnership in our work!

Blessings,

John
